Emergencies happen, and sometimes they cannot be avoided. Knowing how to respond to an unexpected injury or accident can make a world of difference. Our pediatric dentist offers emergency dentistry with same-day and next-day appointments for crises like toothaches, knocked out teeth, and broken restorations.
The first step to responding to a dental crisis is to keep your family dentist’s number on hand. We recommend saving our practice’s number and address in your mobile phone. The sooner you can call us, the sooner we can accommodate your child.
As children become more active, the possibility of enduring dental trauma from an accidental fall or a sport-related injury becomes more likely. If your child is bleeding profusely or has developed deep lacerations, you will need to take him or her to a hospital.
If dental injuries from falls and facial trauma occur without deep lacerations or heavy bleeding, you can call our office to schedule an emergency appointment. In some instances, broken and chipped teeth can be repaired. If possible, save your child’s tooth or its pieces in milk or Save-a-Tooth (available at most large pharmacies or supermarkets) until you arrive.
Toothaches are our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong. Most of the time, a toothache signifies that a tooth is infected. If your child wakes with a toothache, give him or her over-the-counter pain medication and call our office to make an appointment. Do not place aspirin directly over the affected tooth because it can cause irritation to soft tissue.
Fillings, inlays, and crowns can break and fall out. Whenever possible, save the pieces of a restoration to bring to your appointment. Be sure to call our office as soon as possible so that we can arrange for your arrival. If the restoration in question is a custom one, your child will need to wear a temporary restoration until his or her permanent one is ready.
